Year 1’s, congrats on finishing your first ever med school exams! I heard the SAQ was a tough one, but I am sure you all did your best and slayed.
Final year students! Your job offers are coming out in just 2 weeks! For all of you moving interstate, enjoy the extra $$$.
In other news, the NSWMSC hosted their Emergency Medical Challenge this month! No CSU team was present unfortunately, but shout out to Chris in first year who came along to socials! All in all it was a great day, we will have to get a team together for next year to take home the trophy!
Please enjoy this photo of me covered in fake full thickness burns (vaseline and tissue paper) on my arms. The doctors and students informed me that they could hear me screaming from down the hall during the challenge, which was apparently very realistic. My career as an actor could become a reality, so I am choosing to keep that as my backup plan if medicine does not work out…
… which, considering the Federal Government’s workforce strategy modelling released this month is not a far off reality.

CHARMS President Address - Harvey Lew
G’day beautiful people,
We’ve officially reached the halfway point of the year, which somehow feels both impossible and entirely believable. I hope everyone is doing okay as we head into the second half of 2026.
Firstly, a huge congratulations to our first and second-year students on finishing your mid-year exams. Hopefully you've all had the chance to switch your brain off for a little while, catch up on sleep, spend some time with family and friends, and enjoy a well-earned break before jumping back into another busy semester.
To our clinical year students, I hope many of you are also beginning to enjoy some time off over the coming weeks. Placements can be incredibly rewarding, but they can also be exhausting, so I hope you're able to take the opportunity to recharge before heading back into the hospital.
With the social calendar ramping up, Medicine Ball is now only five weeks away. If you haven't secured your ticket yet, there's still time. Early bird tickets have now closed, but standard tickets remain available for the next few weeks. This year's theme, A Night of Fantasea, is shaping up to be an incredible evening, and we can't wait to celebrate with everyone on 1 August at the Orange Ex-Services Club.
Behind the scenes, CHARMS has also been working on a number of initiatives for our junior students. Planning is underway for a Year 2 Crash Course, designed to help prepare students for the transition into clinical years, as well as an information session to help Year 2 students navigate the process of choosing their Rural Clinical School for Years 3–5. More information on both events will be released soon.
A big good luck as well to everyone travelling to AMSA Convention in Adelaide this week. We hope you have an incredible few days meeting medical students from across Australia, learning something new, and making the most of everything Convention has to offer. Travel safely, have fun, and represent CSU and CHARMS proudly. A special thank you to our AMSA Representative, Claudia, and Junior AMSA Representative, Taylor, for all the work they've put into organising our delegation over the past few months.
Finally, as we head into the second half of the year, don't forget to check in with the people around you. Medicine has a habit of becoming all-consuming, and it's easy to lose sight of the importance of looking after ourselves and each other. Whether it's grabbing a coffee, checking in on a mate, or asking for help when you need it, those small things really do make a difference.
That's all from me this month. Enjoy the break if you're lucky enough to have one, stay warm, and I look forward to catching up with you all in the near future.

Princess Mia (Thermopolis) Shakeshaft’s Psych Term!
Hi everyone, I hope you are all not too deep in the winter blues!
Recently I was very lucky to head down to Melbourne for a 5-week mental health placement at Western health. I attended both Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, and for those not well versed in Melbourne geography (myself included) they are in the outer Western suburbs of Melbourne.
The placement itself was super eye-opening, and I had very great exposure to inpatient psychiatry with lots of subspeciality work including child and adolescent, perinatal and aged psychiatry. I also got to see ECT and psychiatric rehabilitation services as well as a specialist women’s unit.
At times I did feel like a small fish in a very large pond, but all the staff were very welcoming! Footscray Hospital was opened earlier this year, and sorry to Albury Base, but felt like I was entering a 5-star hotel lobby. Whilst there were too many coffee shops to count, I did find a lovely cafe with a rooftop terrace overlooking the city.
While the placement was great, having 5 weeks of free accommodation in Melbourne was a great bonus (especially with free PT)! I filled my free time with catching up with friends, attending multiple footy (AFL) games - up the swannies, shopping, eating, visiting overpriced grocery stores and the occasional study session in the State Library. I also managed to explore some of Victoria with trips to Geelong and Bendigo for a bit of basketball (don’t ask about the results 😭).
I had such an amazing experience and couldn’t recommend enough to anyone offered similar placements!

NSWMSC Response to the NSW Budget Release
The NSW Budget includes welcome investment in healthcare, but it misses an opportunity to strengthen the future workforce that communities will rely on for decades to come.
Medical students, junior doctors and rural communities are already feeling the pressures of workforce shortages, financial hardship and increasing demand on the health system.
Supporting the next generation of doctors isn’t about students, it’s about ensuring patients across NSW can continue to access timely, high-quality healthcare in the years to come.

Claudia Hampson’s AMSA Council 2 Update! + Some insights into AMSACON26
On Sunday, I flew to Adelaide to attend my second AMSA National Council.
The most relevant thing I have seen thus far was the presentation from the Chair of Disability, who seemed really interested in making sure that AMSA Disability coordinates between different unit so that the most difference is made in terms of access and inclusion across universities.
The policies we’ve looked over so far have been super interesting and highly applicable to CSU, reviewing AMSA’s stance on Rural Clinical Schools, First Nations and Indigenous Health Curriculum, Rural, Regional and Remote Health and Graduate Outcomes.
On Wednesday, AMSA’s National Convention will begin! I was lucky enough to score one of the field trip tickets, so I’m very excited to go on the Bowel Anastomosis Field Trip.
This Convention also seems to have more of a focus on rural healthcare, which I’m really interested to see, especially as it will likely have more of a focus on rural healthcare in NT and SA.
